SCSPA happily welcomed 125 students and advisers from 10 South Carolina high schools to the annual Spring Conference in March.
The event was hosted by the University of South Carolina College of Information and Communications and the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association. It was a great opportunity for middle and high school student journalists to learn about journalism and student media. A variety of breakout sessions with professional guest lecturers featured topics such as “Photojournalism: natural disasters and protests,” “Storytelling in the digital age: Mastering modern media” and “Intro to documentary filmmaking.” CIC faculty and undergraduate students presented sessions and panels.
Along with this, individual students and their respective schools were recognized for their work on their broadcast, online and newsprint media during an awards ceremony at the end of the program. Lillian Mirosavich of Richland Northeast High School was named the 2025 South Carolina Journalist of the Year, an award that is given by SCSPA and the Journalism Education Association. Maggie Harmon of Gilbert High School was the recipient of the SCPSA Scholarship.
Registration details for the SCSPA Fall Conference on Oct. 8, 2025 will be shared shortly. SCSPA and the USC College of Information and Communications cannot wait to have students back on campus soon and send their thanks to all who attended the Spring 2025 Conference!
