SCSPA has established the Bertram Rantin Scholarship, a $1,000 award to debut in Spring 2026. The scholarship will be awarded annually to the South Carolina Scholastic Journalist of the Year, if the recipient chooses to attend the University of South Carolina’s College of Information and Communications.
The scholarship honors Betram Rantin, the 1977 Scholastic Journalist of the Year and a former SCSPA vice president. Rantin began his journalism career as a student at Manning High School, where he worked as a photographer, news editor and eventually editor-in-chief of The Monarch newspaper.
For over 20 years, Rantin has shared his professional expertise as an adjunct instructor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. He was recognized as SJMC’s first winner of the Outstanding Adjunct Instructor Award in the 2019-2020 academic year.
The Bertram Rantin Scholarship highlights SCSPA’s support for the next generation of South Carolina student journalists. This award celebrates Rantin’s legacy by giving students an added opportunity at USC.
